For the first time ever, a question on carers was included in the 2001 Census. This has led to unprecedented, reliable knowledge both locally and nationally about carers. In 2007 Carers UK discovered the question about caring was under threat from a lack of funding and we began our campaign to Keep Counting Carers. In April 2008 Government confirmed that extra funding would be made available and the carers question could be included in England and Wales. This was quickly followed by confirmation that the question could be included in Scotland.
