The ninth annual Carers Rights Day, organised by Carers UK, will be held on 5th December 2008. The focus of this year’s Carers Rights Day is Making the Most of Your Money. Groups around the country will be holding events to make sure that carers know their rights, and are getting the support and benefits they deserve:
- Nearly three quarters of carers are financially worse-off as a result of caring, with many living in poverty. Yet 40-60% of disability benefits, and an estimated £740m of carers’ benefits, go unclaimed each year.
- Many carers simply do not realise that they are entitled to financial help, or struggle to understand poorly explained information and complex forms. You can help carers understand and claim what they are entitled to.
- Carers UK can provide resources, like our free Looking after Someone advice guide, explaining what benefits carers can access. Just getting clear information can make a real difference. On average, each carer who calls CarersLine is £25 a week better off as a result of our expert advice.
On Carers Rights Day 2008, hundreds of local groups will run events, making a real difference to the lives of carers in their areas. Register to run your own event, and receive a free local action pack, by filling in our online registration form.
